Program Description
The Plumbing Technician Certificate Program is a postsecondary vocational training program designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in the plumbing trade within the State of Illinois. The program provides foundational instruction in residential and light commercial plumbing systems consistent with Illinois industry standards.
This program does not license students as plumbers. Graduates are prepared to seek employment as plumbing apprentices, plumbing helpers, or entry-level technicians under the supervision of a licensed plumbing contractor in accordance with Illinois law.
Instructional Scope
Curriculum includes:
- OSHA-aligned jobsite safety training
- Illinois plumbing code overview (educational only)
- Identification and proper use of plumbing tools and materials
- Pipe installation methods (PVC, copper, PEX)
- Drain, waste, and vent (DWV) systems
- Water distribution systems
- Fixture installation (sinks, toilets, faucets, water heaters)
- Introductory troubleshooting techniques
- Blueprint reading fundamentals
Training Environment & Supervision
All practical instruction is conducted:
- In a controlled lab or workshop environment
- Under direct instructor supervision
- Using structured educational projects
Students do not independently contract, perform unsupervised field work, or represent themselves as licensed plumbers. No large-scale commercial, industrial, or municipal plumbing systems are installed as part of this program.
Safety & Risk Management
The institution maintains:
- General liability insurance
- Workers’ compensation coverage (if applicable)
- Documented safety policies and procedures
- Required personal protective equipment (PPE) usage
- Instructor-to-student supervision ratios appropriate for shop instruction
